Review Food Package Changes

Materials from the food package changes Webex are being provided again, so you can review them now that it is time to begin making those changes for October food packages. If you have not done so already, you may want to print out the Quick Reference to have nearby when telling participants about October changes. Please refer to the following documents.

If you have any questions about this information, please contact Chris or Kate.

Milk & Cheese

As we announced on the June 19 conference call, there are changes to how milk and cheese will be issued related to the food rule. We had mentioned that MSPIRIT needed some additional updates, and issuance for October benefits should be delayed until we completed those updates. All of the new milk items have been entered and are ready for use, however, A NEW FOOD PACKAGE WILL NEED TO BE ENTERED FOR EACH PARTICIPANT (2 and over) WHO RECEIVES COW'S MILK, otherwise SPIRIT will not allow issuance beyond September 30th for these participants. In addition, as of Monday, July 14th, the milk edit options will be changed (from 4 quart increments to 1 quart increments). See the guidence document for more detail on what you need to do and how this will work for cheese substitutions. You may want to wait until the cheese substitution rate is changed next week before updating food packages starting in October. Please call the state office if you have ANY questions. And, once again, thank you for your cooperation and patience as we work through all these changes!

Changes to the Approved Food List

As soon as it is printed, a new approved food list will be shipped to clinics. The new list will be effective October 1, 2014. The Mountain Plains Regional Office held a conference call and clarified under the new Food Rule these changes. We expect to have it posted to the website by Friday. It will be located under the Program Booklet section in the Local Agency Staff page.

Healthcare Provider Letter

As discussed in the June 19, 2014 conference call, there are updates to the formula prescription forms and a new provision which allows medical providers to defer to the local RD for supplemental foods issuance on food package 3 (as of October 1). We have prepared a letter for you to use with healthcare providers to educate them about the changes. Please attach the Similac Prescription Form (updated), the Medically Necessary Formula Request Form (exp. 9/30/14) and the updated Medically Necessary Formula Request (effective 10/1/14) to the Healthcare Provider letter for reference. Call Kate or Chris if you have any questions.
