Local Agency Conference Call

Please join us for a Local Agency Conference Call on May 1, 2014 at 9:00am. Please view the WebEx information and agenda before the call begins.

Two Positions Available with Flathead WIC

Flathead WIC is accepting applications for two positions: Certified Professional Authority (CPA), which closes May 2, 2014, and a Health Program Assistant II/Breastfeeding Peer Counselor which closes May 5, 2014. Please review the position announcements if interested.

Yogurt and Whole Wheat Pasta

Sometime in the spring of 2015, we will be authorizing yogurt and whole wheat pasta. According to the new food rule, we cannot roll out this change until then. In the meantime, please start checking what brands of quart-sized yogurt are available in your area and the cost. Also check out whole wheat pasta. Whole wheat flour can be the only flour listed and it must come in a 16 oz. package. Please email Leah with what you find. Thank you!

Lactaid Milk Sizes

Some jugs of Lactaid milk contain only 3 quarts of milk (96 oz.) as opposed to 4 quarts in a gallon. When giving this milk to participants, make sure to educate them to purchase the gallon size of product.

April Time Study Wrap-up

April is almost over! Everyone should have their time entered into the time study program by Friday, May 2nd. I am aware that a lot of agency staff do not enter WIC hours in a timely fashion. Trying to recreate an entire month is not in the best interest of the WIC program. If you have any problems, please contact Bernadette or call the HelpDesk at 444-2740.

MSBC Announces $500 Kickstarter Grant for a Breastfeeding Support Group

The Montana State Breastfeeding Coalition (MSBC) is offering up to five $500 “Kickstarter” grants to Montana communities where a hospital is contemplating, beginning or already in the process of working toward Baby Friendly Hospital Designation. The purpose of the award is to start a breastfeeding coalition or to re-energize an already existing local breastfeeding coalition by starting a Baby Bistro or breastfeeding support group in your community to support breastfeeding mothers. Check out the details and apply by May 31st.

CLC Training

We are happy to remind local WIC staff that Missoula will be the site for the next Certified Lactation Counselor Training to be held July 21-25, 2014. Registration is $625. This 5 day training includes a certification exam on the last day. It's the same course offered by Healthy Children's Center on Breastfeeding, and is one that many WIC breastfeeding advocates and experts have appreciated and benefited from. This is a locally hosted conference, so please contact Missoula WIC for information and registration, rather than going through Healthy Children. Learn more here. We hope to see you in July! Please contact Arwyn Welander at (406) 258-4827 if you have questions.

Online Maternal Nutrition and Wellness Modules

Review this information if you are interested in registering for this course. There is limited space and registration paperwork is due on May 5th 2014.

Free Nutrition Education Materials

Noodle Soup offers three nutrition education materials as free downloadable PDF documents. One is on increasing vegetables, a second is on making my plate choices and a third in on managing a young childs weight. Check them out.

Sesame Street Food for Thought

Mark Squires discovered a few more copies of the Sesame Street Food for Thought packets. They need a good home. The first clinic that e-mails Chris requesting the packets, gets them all.

FNS Summer Food Service Program

USDA Food & Nutrition Service Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) has important information about food assistance during the summer months for you and your participants. Operated by State Agencies, the SFSP proves free, nutritious meals for kids at local sites such as schools, recreation centers, playgrounds, parks, churches, summer camps and more. For information on where your participants can find sites that provide summer meals you can visit the WhyHunger website or call the National Hunger Hotline at 1-866-3-HUNGRY or 1-877-8-HAMBRE. View the handouts in English & Espanol.
