Holiday Greetings

'Tis the season to reflect on those in our lives we are thankful for, and all of us here at the State WIC Office want to express a heartfelt thank you and season's greetings to all of you! Your hard work and dedication makes the Montana WIC Program work, and your efforts create critical and lasting improvements in the lives of WIC participants. We hope each and every one of you will have the opportunity to enjoy time spent with loved-ones this holiday season, and have a very happy New Year!

Big News! Changes in Similac Contract Formulas

Abbott Nutrition is in the process of changing how they make some of their formulas. The major change that affects WIC is that their Similac Sensitive, Similac for Spit Up and Similac Total Comfort will be reformulated to 19 calories per ounce from 20 calories per ounce. This no longer qualifies it as a WIC standard formula per USDA guidelines. The new formula will be appearing on the shelves starting in April. In response to this change Montana WIC will be phasing out these formulas. It is very important to read through the following attachments and distribute the appropriate communication to your participants and local providers. We have also developed talking points and educational materials to use with participants on bottle feeding and formula tips. As we are on 3 month issuance, and parts of the new policy will take effect January 1, it is vital that all staff are informed of the changes. We will be discussing this as well on our January 9th conference call from 9-11 am. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Refer to the following links for the: Participant Letter, Provider Letter, Local Agency Letter, Retailer Letter, Similac prescription, and Updated Medical Formula Request Form.

Visit the SNAP ED Site!

SNAP Ed has a portion of their site with education on "Nutrition Through the Seasons" including what foods are available throughout the year and links to more information about the foods and recipes. This is a great resource for education materials and ideas.
