Western Montana Chapter for the Prevention of Elder Abuse
The Western Montana Chapter for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (The Chapter) is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization based in Missoula, MT. The Chapter was founded in 2000 as part of a state initiative providing payee services to individuals who were at risk and unable to manage their own finances. The Chapter provides a wide array of services for individuals in need of assistance in managing their finances including payeeships, trustee management and conservatorships. The Chapter serves clients primarily located in Missoula, Ravalli, Flathead, Lake, Sanders, Mineral and Lincoln counties, but also maintains clients residing in outlying areas like Great Falls and Helena. The Chapter is managed by a volunteer board of directors. The members are composed of people with backgrounds in human services, private business, certified public accountants and other related areas.
The Chapter offers payee services to clients that are deemed appropriate through the Social Security Administration Office. Typically, such persons include those receiving Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and certain individuals receiving benefits from the Veterans Administration.
The Chapter provides the role of court appointed conservator and guardian in regards to individuals found to lack the ability to handle their own affairs. The Chapter also acts as trustee to regular and special needs trusts (where SSI and Medicaid are protected) established to help maintain funds for an individual.
The Chapter offers case management through their staff social workers. The Chapter prides itself on being able to provide both a service customized to meet an individuals financial need along with assisting in Medicaid, pharmacy plans, energy assistance, etc. The Chapter can also assist people in obtaining information about programs in their area and provide contact information to clients regarding their specific needs
Executive Director Kevin Brown provided the following information regarding The Chapters current client inventory. The Chapter is currently serving 170 individuals in Western Montana. That includes a client in Great Falls, Helena and Butte as well. The Chapter is currently offering payee services to 90 people who receive benefits from Social Security or Veterans Administration. The Chapter is the court appointed conservator for 65 persons determined by the district court to be in need of such service. The Chapter is acts as either full or co-guardian for 29 persons deemed incompetent by the district court. The Chapter has been selected as trustee for 18 people.
