Lifecycles: Prevention of Elder Abuse
Lifecycles is a non profit organization with three major programs: Carrier Alert, Guardianship Council and Education Outreach.
The Carrier Alert Program is a program that enlists the US Post Office and its postal carriers to alert APS if a person on the Carrier Alert Program does not pick up their mail for several days. The postal carrier calls either Jackie S. at the post office or calls APS directly with the report. An APS worker looks up the person’s name in the Carrier Alert directory and calls the home. If no answer, the APS worker calls the Emergency numbers listed on the CA form until they reach a person. Once it is established that the person is okay, is in the hospital, is away from their home visiting or for other activities, the APS worker calls the Post office to report their findings.
The Guardianship Council is being revamped at this time. There will be a Council made up of community professionals who work with the elderly and adult DD clients. The council is appointed as the guardian for a ward that APS is now or would be appointed as guardian by the court. The council oversees the guardianships and trains volunteers to act as agents for the council in the day to day activities needed by the wards.
The Education Outreach committee provides education to the public about elder abuse including exploitation. Outreach includes a speaker’s bureau, radio and TV. appearances, radio advertising, etc. The Education Outreach committee also sets up educational materials in booths at the State Fair, health fairs, Senior Centers, etc. in the county.
The Guardianship Council is a subsidiary of the Lifecycles Program. Its purpose is to serve as a guardian for elderly and adult DD clients who do not have family members available or capable of managing a guardianship for them. APS usually takes on these guardianships, but due to time constraints, cannot spend as much time with the wards as needed. The Council trains agents to provide hands on help, visitation, outings, etc. for the wards. The agent also attends the care plan meetings for the wards and reports back to the GC on all aspects of their involvement with the ward.
Serves APS Region 2 counties of Blaine, Cascade, Choteau, Glacier, Hill, Liberty, Teton)
