A workgroup to study the issue of the use of Medication Aides in Nursing Homes was created in October 2009 by the Department of Public Health and Human Services and the Department of Labor and Industry.  It was formed in response to House Joint Resolution 17 from the 2009 Montana Legislature. The 8-member workgroup will discuss and make recommendations on the following topics:

  • Identify other states where the use of medication aides are allowed in nursing homes in order to obtain and review information from those states about:
    • Qualifications of medication aides, including education and training required;
    • Level of supervision by licensed nurses that is required;
    • Restrictions on the types of medications or routes of administration;
    • Liability and licensure issues related to supervision by licensed nurses;
    • Any study, evaluation, or analysis completed by other states related to use of medication aides;
    • Problems encountered and successes achieved in use of medication aides;
    • Structure for the regulation and licensure or certification of medication aides;
  • Obtain and review information from appropriate state or national organizations related to the use of medication aides.
