Maternal and Child Health
Block Grant

The Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant, Title V of the Social Security Act, is the only federal program devoted to improving the health of all women, children and families. **States must provide a three dollar match for every four Federal dollars allocated.

Funds are awarded to local health departments to address one of the National Performance Measures or State Performance Measures.

The Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant provides financial support to local county health departments and helps fund the following state programs:

  • Children’s Special Health Services
    • Newborn Metabolic and Hearing Screening
  • Family Planning
  • Fetal, Infant and Child Mortality Review Program
  • Maternal and Child Health Coordination
  • Oral Health Program
  • Public Health Home Visiting
  • Immunization activities
  • Local Health Departments to address national and state performance measures (immunizations, teen pregnancy, childhood injury prevention, breastfeeding, etc.)
