HAIs are listed among the top ten leading causes of death in the United States. It is estimated that each year there are more than 1.7 million infections, 99,000 deaths, and $3.1 billion dollars in excess healthcare costs in acute care hospitals alone.

The Montana Healthcare-Associated Prevention Initiative is committed to the prevention of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) by:

• Collaborating with healthcare quality and professional organizations to implement strategies for the elimination of HAIs in Montana

• Standardizing HAI surveillance and infection prevention and control practices throughout the state

• Mentoring/supporting infection preventionists in all healthcare facilities in the state with evidence-based consultative services
