Helena High's Jace Williams to receive Hamilton Relay Scholarship
Williams has significant hearing loss
Helena High School senior Jace Williams will receive the Hamilton Relay Scholarship Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 4:30 p.m. in the Capitol Rotunda in Helena.
Every year, the scholarship goes to an individual who is deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled and plans to further their education. Each year, one Montana kid receives this scholarship.
Connie Phelps, of the Montana Telecommunications Access Program (MTAP), said the soon-to-be Helena High graduate’s ability to overcome significant hearing loss has been an inspiration to others. “Jace is a great role model,” she said. “When you look at all the things he has accomplished despite his disability, it’s quite impressive.”
During his high school career, the all-around Williams has volunteered in his community, hosted benefits for families in need, mentored youth, competed in athletics, and participated in theatre.
Williams was born with a significant hearing loss, but diagnosed at about age 2. Jace and his brother, Witt, have previously performed in the MTAP Deaf Awareness Gala, playing their fiddle and guitar.
Phelps said over the years Williams has received equipment training, some of which he’ll use in college. “We’ve also introduced him to real time captioning as well,” she said.
Hamilton Telecommunications contracts with the Department of Public Health and Human Services to provide the Montana Relay service. The Montana Relay makes it possible to make phone calls between a standard telephone and a text telephone. About 900 Montanans utilize MTAP services each year.
