Gifts With A Lift program spreads holiday cheer for Montana State Hospital patients

A program to benefit Montana State Hospital patients during the holiday season is accepting donations at several locations across Montana, officials with the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) said today.

Every year, Gifts With A Lift, now in its 61st year, ensures that Montana State Hospital patients receive a Christmas gift through the generous donations of Montanans. For the past 23 years, the program has been jointly coordinated by the National Alliance for Mental Illness-MT and DPHHS.

DPHHS Director Richard Opper said Gifts With A Lift continues to thrive decade after decade. “This program helps fill an important void for so many Montana State Hospital patients who are away from home during the holidays,” Opper said. “Some patients have family and friends who are able to send holiday gifts, while others are not so fortunate.”

Currently, there are approximately 185 residents at the hospital who will benefit from the program this year.

Ideas for gift suggestions include, but are not limited to the following: Pocket games/books, CD’s/CD players, socks, T-Shirts/sweatshirts, cards, personal care items, hats/gloves, magazines, fanny packs, phone cards, jackets, craft kits, batteries, MP3 players, scarves, slippers, headphones, postage stamps and stationery.

Individuals or service organizations interested in ‘adopting’ a patient are encouraged to contact Beth Eastman of the Montana State Hospital at 406-693-7145.

Gifts mailed to the hospital should not be wrapped; however, donations of wrapping paper and gift boxes are welcome. “Please include a name and address in the package and a return receipt so we may acknowledge the arrival of your gifts,” Eastman said.

Gifts can be mailed to Gifts With A Lift, c/o Beth Eastman, PO Box 300, Montana State Hospital, Warm Springs, MT 59756. In order to arrive in time for Christmas, gifts should be dropped off or mailed by December 17.

The program also accepts cash donations to purchase additional Christmas gift items. Make checks payable to: Gifts with a Lift and mail to: NAMI-MT, P.O Box 1021, Helena, MT 59624.

Montana State Hospital is the only publicly operated inpatient psychiatric hospital in the state. It provides treatment to adults who have serious mental illnesses and who are referred from hospitals, mental health programs, and district courts from across the state.
