Montanans to be honored for efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect

Montanans dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect will be honored Tuesday, April 16 at the annual Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect Conference, the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) announced today.

The event takes place in Helena at 11 a.m. at the Red Lion Colonial Inn.

Those to be recognized include licensed foster parents, youth in foster care, child advocates, and DPHHS Child and Family Services Division staff.

“Protecting Montana’s kids is truly a team effort,” DPHHS Director Richard Opper said. “It’s so important that we take time to recognize those who, in many cases, work behind the scenes to help keep kids safe. I am so appreciative of those who step up every day to help in this effort.”

Those being recognized this year are from Billings, Kalispell, Havre, Helena, Bozeman, Butte, Great Falls, Miles City, Malta, Lewistown and Libby.

DPHHS will present the following awards:

  • Montana’s Children’s Trust Fund award.
  • Resource Parents of the Year.
  • Youth Achievement of the Year.
  • Above and Beyond Award.
  • Creative Solutions.
  • Engaging Families in Positive Change.

The Montana Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) organization will also present several awards. CASA refers to trained community volunteers appointed by a judge to represent the best interests of abused and neglected children in court. CASA awards are:

  • Judge of the Year.
  • Director of the Year.
  • CASA Volunteer of the Year.

The three-day conference is being held from April 16-18 and brings together foster/adoptive parents, therapists, counselors, judges, Tribal social service representatives, county attorneys and DPHHS Child and Family Services Division staff.
