Helena AmeriCorps volunteers partner with DPHHS to hold healthy food drive, MLK Day community breakfast

January food drive to support Helena Food Share

From now until Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Jan. 16, AmeriCorps Volunteers are partnering with Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) to coordinate a healthy food drive in Helena.

Healthy, non-perishable items can be donated at the following locations in Helena: Albertsons, DPHHS offices, Firetower Coffee House, Lewis and Clark Brewery, Lewis and Clark Library, Real Food Market, Safeway, Starbucks on Prospect Avenue, and Van’s Thriftway.

Donations of sugary foods, such as pastries and fruit snacks, should be avoided.

In addition, on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Helena AmeriCorps Volunteers in partnership with DPHHS will hold a community pancake breakfast at the Fellowship Hall behind St. Peter’s Cathedral. In the spirit of service and giving, the breakfast is free and open to the public; however, food and cash donations for Helena Food Share will be gratefully accepted.

“Spending the day hungry is a painful reality for many Montanans and their families,” said DPHHS Director Anna Whiting Sorrell. “Making food donations to local food banks allows the organization to better serve those who need it most. The focus on healthy foods ensures that the individuals who receive the food will be both well-fed and well-nourished. It’s my belief that no Montanan should go to bed hungry.”
