Two DPHHS Programs Combine Efforts to Get the Message Out about Free Cancer Screening

A pair of Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) programs are teaming up to get the message out about free cancer screening services for eligible men and women.

The Montana Cancer Control Programs (MCCP) will mail approximately 20,000 program brochures to participants statewide who are enrolled in the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP).

“The brochures encourage both men and women to get screened for cancer,” said DPHHS Director Anna Whiting Sorrell. “Cervical, colorectal and breast cancers can all be treated more easily when detected early, which is why screenings for these cancers are so important.”

MCCP services include colonoscopy’s and stool tests for eligible men age 50 to 64, pap tests for eligible women age 30 to 64, and mammograms, clinical breast exams, colonoscopy’s and stool tests for eligible women age 50 to 64. This year is the first year the program has attempted outreach to men by offering colorectal screenings.

“Many individuals delay getting screened for cancer due to the cost, putting their own health last after caring for their families and their homes,” said Carrie Strike of the Montana Cancer Control Programs.

DPHHS, in partnership with local human resource development councils, offer the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP), which helps pay part of the winter heating bills for eligible citizens.  The program serves about 20,000 households in Montana.

“As of February 2010, LIEAP participation has increased 23 percent over last year and we expect to process a record number of applications this year,” said LIEAP director Jim Nolan of DPHHS.

Both the Montana Cancer Control Programs and LIEAP provide services in all 56 Montana counties.
