Public Meeting to Address Asbestos Test Results
The Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) are hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at the Montana City School gymnasium to address public health and environmental issues related to recent concerns about asbestos at the Ash Grove Cement plant.
The meeting will bring together state and local officials and representatives from Ash Grove, U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, DEQ and DPHHS. Presenters will include Richard Opper, Director of the Department of Environmental Quality, representatives of the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration and Dr. Steven Helgerson, State Medical Officer for DPHHS.
The meeting will focus on explaining the results of sampling and testing performed at the Ash Grove quarry and cement plant. The meeting will also include a discussion of community health issues related to the findings. Time has been set aside for the general public to ask questions.
Ash Grove workers and the general public, especially those who live in the Montana City area, are encouraged to attend for what is expected to be an informative discussion.
“This will be a great opportunity for anyone with questions or concerns on this issue to bring those forward to various federal, state and local officials,” said DPHHS public information officer Jon Ebelt.
