MTUPP Set to Launch New Smokefree Ad Campaign
WHO: The Clintons, Miller’s Crossing (Helena’s newest smokefree bar), and the Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Program.
WHAT: The launch of the Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Program’s newest smokefree ad campaign, featuring the Clintons, at the kickoff for the ‘I Can’t Wait – Expect Smokefree’ media campaign. The event will feature special presentations and a full concert by the Clintons.
WHERE: Miller’s Crossing, 52 S. Park Ave. – Helena, MT
WHEN: Wednesday, September 24, 2008, beginning at 8 p.m.
WHY: New science shows that as little as 30 minutes of exposure to secondhand smoke results in damage that increases the risk of a heart attack. The new ad campaign sponsored by the Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Program celebrates every Montanan’s right to breathe clean, smokefree air. The media launch draws attention to full implementation of the Montana Clean Indoor Air Act, October 1, 2009. With one year left to go for full implementation, Montana bars and casinos are allowed an exception to the law. Like many Montana bars, Miller’s crossing opted to go smokefree early.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
- There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.
- Exposure to secondhand smoke is a public health problem.
- The majority of Montanans (80%) support smokefree public places, including workplaces like bars, restaurants and casinos.
- October 1, 2008 marks the 3rd Anniversary of Montana’s Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA). Until the law’s full implementation on October 1, 2009, those working in bars and casinos where smoking is permitted are exposed to secondhand smoke.
