Crow Nation Joins National Efforts to Promote Children’s Mental Health
The Apsaalooke (Crow) Children’s System of Care team will host their second annual National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day from 8:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Thursday, May 8.
The event, called ‘Celebrating a Healthy Crow Community,’ will be held in the multi-purpose building on the Crow Agency Reservation.
“Children’s mental health awareness and resources have just recently become a focus in Indian country,” said Christine Good Luck, program director of the Apsaalooke Children’s System of Care (SOC). “People often do not seek treatment for mental health disorders due to stigma. Stigma is not just a matter of using the wrong word or action, it’s about disrespect. It leads to fear, mistrust, and violence against people living with mental illness and their families.”
The event begins with an opening prayer at 8:45 a.m., followed by a presentation at 9:15 a.m. courtesy of Crow youth Tina Hold The Enemy. She will speak about the effects of mental illness on the reservation and how it is treated culturally.
Entertainer Supaman will perform at 10 a.m. and at 11 a.m. is a fun walk sponsored by the Diabetes Outreach program.
A free lunch at noon will be provided by the Apsaalooke Meth Project. A mini pow wow begins at 12:30 p.m.
Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day is a nationwide initiative by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration that spotlights effective programs for children's mental health needs, demonstrates how children's mental health initiatives promote positive youth development, resilience, recovery and shows how youth with mental illness can and do thrive in their communities.
Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend. For more information, call Good Luck at 406-638-4066 ext. 4069.
