DPHHS to Conduct Telephone Survey

A telephone survey focusing on adult American Indian health issues will be conducted over the next several months, the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) said Thursday.

According to Helen Amundson, program manager for the Montana Diabetes Project of DPHHS, American Indians over the age of 18 who live on or near Montana’s seven reservations will be asked to participate in a survey dealing with chronic disease issues associated with heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.

Amundson stresses this is a legitimate survey and nothing will be sold. The survey begins this month and should be completed by the end of December. Information collected will be used to help develop ways to improve prevention efforts. All personal information will be kept confidential.

Calls by DPHHS staff will be directed to some residents of all seven state reservations. The survey takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete per individual. Data will be collected from 1,000 people.

Amundson is grateful for those willing to take part in the project. “The information we collect from this survey will be a valuable tool for us down the road,” she said.
