Quilt Show Honors Breast, Cervical Health Program

Three colorful handmade quilts will be on display beginning this week in the Governor’s Reception Room at the Capitol in Helena.  The display celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Breast and Cervical Health Program of the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS).

The quilts were made over the past five years by cancer survivors, members of the Montana American Indian Women’s Health Coalition, and Laura Glueckert and Myrna Quale, owners of The Enchanted Room quilt shop in Glendive.

On Feb. 14, the Capitol display will be removed, and the quilt display will move among 10 other health facilities throughout the state. A list of those sites is provided below.

The Montana Breast and Cervical Health Program (MBCHP) was created in 1996 through a cooperative agreement between DPHHS and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It provides for free or low-cost breast cancer screening for women ages 50-64 and cervical cancer screening for women ages 35-64. Participants must be uninsured or underinsured, meet income eligibility requirements, and have rarely or never been screened for cervical cancer.

In its first 10 years, the program has provided 14,973 cervical screenings and 46,470 breast screenings.

To learn more about the program, call DPHHS toll-free at 1-888-803-9343 or contact Julie Galstad, DPHHS health education specialist, at 444-0927 or jgalstad@mt.gov.
