Conference to Focus on Child Abuse Prevention
The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) will sponsor a conference on the prevention of child abuse and neglect April 26-28 at the Red Lion Colonial Hotel in Helena.
The conference will feature nationally and internationally recognized presenters from across the nation speaking on such topics as adoption, current research in child welfare, working with families affected by poverty, substance abuse and mental heath concerns, cultural competency, and legal issues related to child protection.
The event is aimed at providing ongoing education and support for social workers, foster and adoptive parents, and other professionals who work with the child welfare system. It was organized in cooperation with CASA of Montana and the Montana Supreme Court Administrator's Office. More than 500 people are expected to attend.
Governor Brian Schweitzer will speak at the Celebration of Children Breakfast on Wednesday at 8 a.m. Other dignitaries at the breakfast will be Montana Supreme Court Justice Jim Rice, Attorney General Mike McGrath, Lewis and Clark County Commissioner Sandy Oitzinger, DPHHS Director Robert Wynia, and DPHHS Child and Family Services Division Administrator Shirley K. Brown.
