Environmental Health (EH) Statewide Needs Assessment
The EPHT project conducted a statewide needs assessment of environmental health concerns, which will incorporate information from four assessment processes:
- We added 20 questions to the State Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey starting in 2004. This is a telephone survey that solicits self-reported health information from a random sample of approximately 4000 Montana citizens yearly. Additions included 20 questions about adult and childhood asthma, indoor air quality, and home environment. The core BRFSS survey also included two questions about perceived health concerns from air or water that were added to the national survey in 2004. See the summary of survey responses below:

- An EPHT Advisory Group included stakeholders from a variety of agencies and interest groups. The Advisory Group was surveyed to assess perceptions of priority EH concerns in Montana.
- County and Tribal Public Health staff as well as County Extension Agents and County Commissioners were surveyed to solicit their input on EH concerns and assess the infrastructure and training needs to address concerns. This survey was conducted by MSU College of Nursing. See survey results below:

- 10-12 sites were selected to conduct community-based EH needs assessments between October 2003 and September 2004. County Public Health Departments or Tribal Health Departments were asked to respond to a letter requesting interested parties. Sites that expressed interest were given funding to help support the gathering of information from their communities to prioritize local environmental health concerns. Two additional sites completed assessments in 2005 and four in 2006.
