Prevention Program Overview


 

The Montana Injury Prevention and Control Program is organized as a prevention component of the State Trauma Care System. For more information about how you can participate in the developing state trauma care system, contact Kim Todd, Trauma Coordinator, DPHHS, at 444-4459.

In 1998, an Injury Prevention and Control Plan was adopted.

The following are current injury prevention efforts coordinated by the Montana Injury Prevention and Control Program.



Child Occupant Protection Program (COPP)
people
This program is a collaborative effort with the Department of Transportation, Traffic Safety Bureau, local law enforcement and local health care providers. The program offers training in child safety seat use and on methods of increasing adult safety belt use. Classes are two and four long. Montana "Safe Communities/SAFE KIDS" program

This program has offered grants to local coalitions in Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, Helena, Butte, Kalispell and Missoula and other areas to increase public support for increased child safety seat and seat belt law enforcement, and drunk driving prevention. "Stay on Top of It" water safety campaign

This program is designed to educate and raise awareness of water safety issues for the public. Main goals are to reduce alcohol use while boating and increase personal floatation device use. This program is supported by a coalition of a multitude of agencies. Contact Patty Carrell at Montana SAFE KIDS (800 421-6667) for more information.

"Don’t Thump Your Mellon" Montana Bike Safety/Helmet Use Program
Designed for ages 10-12, this program provides a program manual to those interested in proper helmet use and bike safety. Contact Thom Danenhower at 444-4126 for more information.

Senior Citizen Fall Prevention

This program is a home visit and senior care facility visit-based program to reduce fall hazards and do injury prevention awareness and education. A program module and materials are available.

Intentional Injury Prevention, Suicide
The EMS & TS injury program, Family Community Health Bureau (FCHB), and the Critical Illness and Trauma Foundation (CIT), Bozeman, have developed a state strategic suicide prevention plan. Other plans call for development of a pilot data-driven rural state suicide prevention program in Montana during 2002.

National Fire Protection Administration "Risk Watch" Program
riskwatch

This program is a school-based comprehensive injury prevention program for grades pre-school through 8th grades. The program has been implemented in Bozeman and Lockwood, with other activity in Belgrade, Missoula and Polson. This program provides a strong, nationally-sponsored, comprehensive pediatric injury prevention program for fire and EMS to take to schools. Plans call for implementing the program in more locations across the state.

Injury Prevention Data & Research

This program provides a wide variety of injury prevention material and data - both nationally and in Montana. The program works closely with the Traffic Safety Bureau and Family Community Health Bureau.

General Injury Prevention Information & Resources

COPP program grants are available to hold child safety seat clinics in your community. These are $1,000.00 per event/annually. For further information, contact Priscilla Sinclair at 444-7417.

MONTANA SAFE KIDS also has grant programs with a local match/in kind. Contact Patty Carrell at 800 421-6667 regarding becoming a local SAFE KIDS chapter or state affiliate.
