These programs serve people with very severe disabilities who may have few primary self-help skills; some have physical disabilities and some have challenging behaviors. Programs serving these people must have higher staff ratios to serve individuals with intensive training needs. As of June 1998, there were 309 individuals receiving intensive adult work services.
For most of us, being a member of our community means having a job and going to work. With this service very intensive habilitation services are made available to the individual. The programs enable individuals to engage in paid work if that is possible. If the individuals are not able to work at this time, structured training and integrated community activities are provided. Activities are designed to assist the individual to move towards greater independence and to become a participating member of the community.
To learn more about Intensive Adult Work Services or to apply for these services, please contact the developmental disabilities program office nearest you.
