Montana Association for the Deaf (MAD)
Who?
The Montana Association of the Deaf was founded in 1912 when 24 deaf adults gathered at the Montana School for the Deaf in Boulder, Montana. The purpose of the organization they formed was to advocate for the social, legal, educational, and economic welfare of the deaf citizens of Montana.
What?
The association keeps current on issues, products, services, and technology related to deafness and disseminates the information to its members via several sources. A directory of and for the deaf was first compiled in 1977 and serves as a valuable, comprehensive resource and includes all members of MAD, friends of the deaf, deaf services in Montana and national resources for the deaf. It is updated every other year. A quarterly newsletter, "Mont-As-De News" has disseminated information of interest to the deaf since 1960.
