Mental Health Oversight Advisory Council

The 1999 Legislature created this council to provide guidance to the Department of Public Health and Human Services in the development and management of an effective public mental health system.

The role of the council is to:

  • Provide an ongoing forum for mental health providers and consumers.
  • Provide leadership and advocacy for the mental health system.
  • Foster cooperative relationships among consumers, providers, the department, and other interested parties.
  • Make specific recommendations to the department and the legislature.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and continuously seek to improve the public health system.

State law requires that half the membership of the council be consumers of mental health services. Other members may include advocates for mental health consumers and their families, members of the public at large, providers of mental health services, legislators, and department representatives.
