The Health Planning Section administers the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and Environmental Public Health Tracking Program (EPHT); provides epidemiology consultations to a cross-section of DPHHS programs, and also provides health planning and data support to programs in the Public Health & Safety Division, as well as Montana’s state and local public health system.  The section develops key statewide health planning documents including State of the State’s Health and County Health Profiles, Montana Public Health in Action Series, Montana’s Healthy People 2010 comparisons, BRFSS reports, and reports addressing environmental health and related chronic diseases; maintains health data surveillance systems; provides survey analysis, interpretation, and presentation of health data for these studies, as well as data to help local communities establish health care provider shortage designations and secure health care providers in disadvantaged areas; and to develop and implement data integration systems and dissemination strategies for programs and projects within the PHSIP Bureau and PHS Division and across the state. The section plays a critical role in developing and maintaining sound, data-driven public health programs and policies that promote health and quality of life and prevent illness, injury, and disability.
