Conference '08

The 1st Regional Native Women’s Journey to Wellness Conference was held in Missoula on May 2, 2008. The one-day conference was attend by 90 women, both Indian and non-Indian. The day was to promote community leadership skills for cancer control. Janet Robideau, Montana Peoples Action and founder of Indian People’s Action, presented on empowering women by using direct action organizing. Maxine Janis spoke to the group about the concepts of holistic health and wellness while being mindful of cultural norms. Martha Spotted Eagle gave an overview of the importance of early detection and breast health. Kitty Felix and members of the Missoula Intertribal Wellness Council addressed the formation of the wellness council. They shared activities that promote wellness and health in their urban Native community. Everyone felt they benefited from the conference and learned skills to use in their local communities.  A delicious luncheon was enjoyed by all. Next year the conference will be in Great Falls.
