WHAT'S NEW?
Expanded Newborn Screening Panel Effective January 17, 2008
Effective January 17, 2008, a new law expanded the panel of required newborn screening tests for all infants born in Montana. The Public Health Laboratory now screens all newborns for 28 metabolic and endocrine conditions. In addition to the previous testing panel of phenylketonuria, galactosemia, congenital hypothyroidism and hemoglobinopathies, the required expanded panel now includes screens for organic acid metabolism disorders, fatty acid oxidation disorders, amino acid metabolism disorders, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, biotinidase deficiency and cystic fibrosis. Please see Newborn Screening for the complete listing of the conditions.
The intent of the new law is to ensure that all infants born in Montana are afforded the best opportunity for diagnosis and treatment of certain congenital conditions. For more information contact Denise Higgins at dehiggins@mt.gov or 406-444-3040.
