The Communicable Disease Control and Prevention Bureau provides core public health functions including: communicable disease surveillance, investigation and consultation; regulatory public health activities; coordination of prevention and treatment; education; training; and policy development.

Communicable Disease Epidemiology Program

  • Collects and reports communicable disease information.
  • Investigates outbreaks and coordinates information exchange for disease control.
  • Evaluates the distribution and cause of communicable disease.
  • Coordinates statewide TB prevention and control program.

Food and Consumer Safety Program

  • Administers and enforces laws regulating food (retail, wholesale, and processing), transient public accommodations (hotels, motels, tourist homes, trailer courts, camp grounds), institutions (schools, prisons, jails), body art (tattoo and body piercing), pools and public bathing facilities.
  • Develops and operates vector control programs to reduce pathways for communicable disease.
  • Enhances food and water security.

HIV/STD Prevention Program

  • Develops the written plan for prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.
  • Coordinates testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Provides education and training to the public and health care professionals.
  • Contracts with community agencies to provide testing, treatment, and counseling services.
  • Coordinates services related to rape and sexual assault prevention.

Immunization Program

  • Manages federally purchased vaccine, including storage and distribution.
  • Collects immunization information via registry and evaluates immunization rates.
  • Supports plans for mass vaccination clinics.
  • Coordinates and trains local public health professionals on vaccine-preventable disease issues.
  • Provides public and professional consultation on issues related to immunization.
